We have chosen the cross of St. Andrew for several reasons. It is symbolic of the province in which we serve - Nova Scotia. St. Andrew is the Patron Saint of Fishermen. who we serve and protect. |

Insignia of the Commodore of the Nova Scotia Lifeboat Institute. The Commodore must come from within the ranks of the Nova Scotia Lifeboat Institute and is appointed for a term of two years. |
Coxswain|green

Coxswain The coxswain in charge of the motor lifeboat, particularly its navigation and steering when at sea and has the authority to direct all boat and crew activities during the mission and modify planned missions to provide for the safety of the boat and the crew. The coxswain is in charge of all Records Management, both land and sea based records, for the Motor Lifeboat. The coxswain shall have the following certifications: Small Vessel Master's Certificate, Radio Operator's Certificate, First Aid Certificate. The coxswain designation requires a significant amount of practice in boat handling as well as previous experience as a boat crew member. Duties - The coxswain regularly inspects the vessel's systems to ensure they are in a ready state. The inspections shall include systems such as navigation, radar, communication, engines, medical, rescue equipment and other motor lifeboat systems and components, |
Surfman|red

Boatswain The boatswain (bos'n) is first a Surfman and in charge of the deck and hull and must be highly skilled in all matters of marlinespike seamanship. Duties - The boatswain regularly inspects the vessel and performs a variety of routine, skilled, and semi-skilled duties to maintain all areas of the motor lifeboat not maintained by the engineering department. These duties can include cleaning, painting, and maintaining the vessel's hull, superstructure and deck equipment as well as executing a formal inspection and preventive maintenance program. The boatswain is responsible for the lives of his fellow Surfman during rescue operation. Surfman The Surfman is a member of the crew and a life-boatman. Being a surfman is one of the most dangerous jobs in the NSLI. It is the Surfman who is "on deck" during rescue operations. |

The insignia of a Nova Scotia Lifeboat Institute trainee. The Port and Starboard colours are reversed on the oars because we assume the lifeboat trainee knows not his left from right side, nor the pointy end from the round end of the lifeboat. It is worn until all basic training has been satisfactorily completed.
